Miriam Peretz is an internationally acclaimed performing artist specializing in traditional dances from the Silk Road (Persia & Central Asia,) as well as ethno-Contemporary dance. She has been a principle dancer with Inbal Ethnic Dance Theater Company (Israel), Wan-Chao Chang Dance Company (Bay Area), as well as a featured soloist in festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe. She has most recently served as the assistant artistic director, choreographer and principle dancer of Ballet Afsaneh dance company (Bay Area) and directed “The Miriam’s Well Project,” an interfaith collaboration incorporating sacred dance, music, and poetry. This highly acclaimed performance piece showcases Miriam’s innovative fusion of traditional, sacred, and contemporary dance forms.. Persian Classical Dance with Miriam Peretz

Saturday 16 June 2012 2 pm – 6 pm

This class will focus on the art of Persian Classical Dance. Characteristic movements include intricate hand and arm work, languid sweeping gestures, footwork patterns and numerous types of spins. Common themes in this dance form inspired by the great Persian poets- Hafez, Rumi, and Omar Khayyam, including the moth to the flame, intoxication with love for the beloved, or a bird spreading it’s wings to fly to freedom. Level: You should have at least one year’s knowledge in any oriental dance form.

Dances of Afghanistan with Miriam Peretz

Sunday 17 June 2012 3 pm - 7 pm

This workshop will give small samples of various Central Asian dance styles, with a main focus on Afghan dance. The workshop will give special attention to the art of spinning (central to all Central Asian dance forms,) and teach Afghan dance vocabulary culminating in a short dance. We will also learn the attan—the national folk dance of Afghanistan, danced at almost all celebrations and rites of passage. Level: You should have at least one year’s knowledge in any oriental dance form.
